Co-ordinator: Gilly Miall 01628 820077 In this parish we pay for a part-time parish administrator, two hours of cleaning a week in the Soltau Centre, our organists and having the grass mown sometimes. But what about everything else that happens to make the parish function? Have you ever wondered who " lights the candles? " opens and closes our churches every day, cleans them, arranges the flowers, washes the altar linen, trims hedges and keeps the churchyards tidy and attractive? " buys and changes light bulbs, cleans brass and silver, cleans the Priory Room and the Soltau Centre (except Fridays)? " paints the Soltau Centre, the Littlewick Green loo and other places as needed, does small repairs, checks the buildings? " shops for, cooks, serves and washes up after 'Young at Heart' and catered fundraising events, makes coffee and washes up after services? " organises fundraising events, sells tickets and loans beautiful gardens for events? " unlocks and locks the Soltau Centre for lettings? " prepares the churches for worship and puts things away afterwards, sets the altars, serves the priest at the altar? " keeps the registers, counts the money, banks the money and keeps the accounts? " lays on healing hands, presides at communion, leads worship, preaches sermons, conducts baptisms, funerals and weddings, prepares people for confirmation, supports trainees, visits the sick and elderly, encourages newcomers? " draws up rotas and distributes them, reads the lesson, acts as an intercessor, leads house-groups, takes communion to the housebound, knits for charity and fundraising, bakes cakes for coffee mornings? " greets people as they arrive at church, gives out hymn books, takes the collection, rings the bell, donates sums of money large or small? " serves on the PCC, is secretary to the PCC, is treasurer to the PCC? " sings in the choir, writes for and edits the Parish News, leads parish walks? " serves as churchwarden (see next issue) and more besides...? Is your answer to all these questions 'someone else'? The answer in fact is VOLUNTEERS. Yes - every task mentioned here is done by unpaid volunteers. Might you consider volunteering to help in some small way? You would help to spread the load and you might find that you got to know people better; you might make new friends and, above all, you would be playing your part in making our parish 'a relevant focus of spiritual growth and Christ's love' - a rich reward indeed.
